India form Indian Premier Football league
The people behind cricket's popular Indian Premier League have come out and organised a super tournament in India for football with many big stars going for a big pay day.
Players like Hernan Crespo and Robert Pires will compete in the Premier League Soccer (PLS) in India with many other well known stars joining in.
The competition's inaugural player auction was held on Tuesday with Argentine legend Crespo emerging with top billing among a host of semi-retired world stars bought to play in the new football tournament.
Crespo was picked up for an annual salary of $US840,000 by the Barasat franchise to play alongside district-level players over seven weeks with Italy's World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro going for $US830,000 to Siligur. Robert Pires fetched $US800,000 from Howrah, Nigerian Jay Jay Okocha got $US550,000 from Durgapur and Fowler was sold to Kolkata for $US530,000.
The tournament will be announced early in the next few weeks, with a start in late February most likely. The five city franchises will play each other twice on a home-and-away basis with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals.
